One of Britain’s most successful Formula 1 drivers never to win a World Championship, David Coulthard now races in the DTM German Touring Car Championship alongside his role as commentator on the BBC Formula 1 coverage.
David began his racing career in 1989, dominating the junior Formula Ford categories before picking up the inaugural McLaren Autosport BRDC Award for young drivers. He competed in F3 and F3000 before joining the Williams F1 team in 1993.
He won the first of his 13 Grands Prix at the 1994 Portuguese Grand Prix when at the wheel of a Williams and went on to finish third in the championship. He moved to McLaren in 1996, winning a further 12 races and 51 podiums during his nine years with the team. A highlight was finishing runner-up to Michael Schumacher in the 2001 title race.
In 2005, he moved to the newly formed Red Bull Racing team where he spent four seasons before retiring. He stayed on as a consultant and reserve driver before taking a role as a pundit on the BBC’s Formula 1 coverage.
This season, David has moved into the commentary box for the first time alongside lead commentator Martin Brundle but will also race a Mercedes in the DTM championship for the second successive season.
