Cranfield student Richard Mead awarded 2011 GPMCT bursary

Richard Mead, from Chester, has become the latest student to be awarded a bursary by the GPMCT to help him pursue his career in motorsport.

Since 2005, the Trust has offered potential stars of the future assistance to fund a course at Cranfield University to help boost the number of high-quality motorsport engineers coming into the industry.
With new legislation seeing a rise in tuition fees, the bursary offered by the Trust has become more critical.

“I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Trust for its most generous support,” said Mead.

“This bursary has served to significantly reduce my concerns over the substantial financial commitment returning to full-time study constitutes.”

Mead studied at the University of Sheffield before taking up a post of aircraft systems simulation engineer at Thales Training and Simulation. He then decided to return to his studies and has recently taken up a degree in motorsport engineering and management.
“I am very grateful to have had such a positive start to my time here at Cranfield,” added Mead.

“After an exciting introduction week featuring some excellent guest lectures, work has now begun here in earnest.

“I am already thoroughly enjoying getting to grips with the exotic composite materials and structural analysis techniques used in motorsport.”

Recipients of a bursary from the GPMCT have since gone on to take up roles at Red Bull, McLaren, Williams, Renault, Team Lotus and Mercedes High Performance Engines.
